Kite & Sail Expedition Las Aves 2020

MARLIN Kite & Sail Expedition Las Aves October 2019

The Ultimate Caribbean Blue Lagoon Kite Trip

The Las Aves are two paradisiacal archipelagos just 30 and 50 miles west of Bonaire in the southern Caribbean. Both archipelagos are uninhabited. Only a small military station made up of a handful of nice officials are worried about peace and quiet on the islands. As the name already says (Aves:birds) thousands of birds live here, which fly early in the morning on the open sea to look for food and come back in the evening with loud screams. Approx. 7×7 nautical miles each, shallow water zones, coral reefs and small Caribbean sand islands spread out. There is no tourism on the Las Aves. The islands are under conservation. The water is crystal clear and underwater you can admire an incredible variety of fish and corals. Only private ships from Venezuela visit the Aves on weekends or? We.

The islands are especially suitable for practising kiteboarding. In the lee of the small islands are hip-deep sand areas without waves. For the freeriders the whole archipelago is available with constant wind and also wave at the border to the open sea. This year we only visit the islands in October. In 2020 a longer expedition is planned for May.

“No. Why would it be his problem to get a clearance for the Aves or Roques. We don’t have a problem with that. You come with your papers and no matter if you have an international or a local crew. We will give you the permission to sail from Curacao immediately.” The nice Indian stocky Curacao Officer smiles at me friendly. “Immigration is no problem either. There, however, all participants of the trip must present themselves with a valid passport of course!

So far to the Curacao rumour mill, about the trips of the German flagged SY MARLIN, with me, Pro Skipper & Kiter Michael on board. All again a lot of wind to problems, which are no problems at all. Last month I myself was on the Las Aves and also on the Los Roques with three fellow sailors and kiters on board. Two weeks of beautiful sailing. Las Aves Sotavento, Gran Roques, Franziski Kite Spot, SakiSaki Kitespot, Cayo de Aqua Kite Spot. Summary: The Aves are the best spot for kitesurfing, sailing and fishing.

“Hello, I am Michael. Skipper of the SY MARLIN. We’re anchored out there.” I stretch out my hand to El Commandante Rodrigues and we start a relaxed conversation in Spanish, which is more familiar to me than English. “What are you going to do? Do you want to stay longer? The troop of five Venezuelan officials arrived with a Lancha from the neighbouring island, where there is a small military station that provides peace and order on the Las Aves. We have the freezer full of chicken and beef. The bilge with 200 bottles of beer, wine and other things. “You probably want to see my papers and check the boat. Right? Come on, we’ll just drive over.” An officer fills out a report, checks ship’s papers and passports, of course the Curacao clearance. Two bottles of rum are on the table as communication support. “You can stay as long as you want. Just let us know and come visit us at the station.” Rodrigues grins at me, shakes my hand. “Hermano! You can stay as long as you want.”

We have the lighthouse island, the long sandy beach and the hip-deep, deep blue and turquoise kite spot for us. The conditions are perfect. “20 knots trade wind blow almost unchecked over the small Iceland. We kite, kite, kite…”

Due to the good experiences with the authorities and the excellent conditions we are planning another kite expedition for October, especially for kiters from Curacao and Bonaire.

Safety 1st

What is really important Sailing aboard SY MARLIN is not like sailing on other ships. The price of a trip should not be the main criterion when choosing the right boat. For us, the safety of our sailors is the highest law on board. Accordingly, we have equipped the MARLIN. Those who save on safety equipment are not at odds with their fellow sailors. Our ship has been approved by the Berufsgenossenschaft See and has the coveted Class A Ship Safety Certificate for worldwide travel. Not many boats meet the same high safety quality...
